Prayer Support Teams for Worship Services

The General Idea
During the worship service, a prayer team will meet and provide prayer support for the various aspects of the worship service. This results in continuous prayer during the worship service and allows 5-7 people per week an opportunity to participate in ministry.

Materials Needed
  • An order of service that indicates what is happening in the worship service.
  • A room set up where a small group of people can comfortably pray.
Time
  • Length of the worship service
Set Up and Preparation
  • A coordinator will oversee and schedule people to participate in this ministry.
  • You will need teams of about 5-7 people who have volunteered to be absent from approximately one service per month or two.
  • One member of each team must be spiritually mature and able to lead the group for a rather lengthy prayer and worship time.
Instructions
During the worship service, the prayer team will meet and provide prayer support for the worship service. They will follow the order of service, and pray for each item occurring in that day’s worship service using a variety of prayer methods as determined by the group leader.

Practical Ideas for Prayer Support Team’s Prayer Focus

  • Read the same Scriptures as a group or individually that are read in the worship service.
  • Have a mix of individual and group prayer.
  • Spend a portion of the time singing the same songs or hymns that the church is singing in the worship service. However, the main purpose of this ministry is prayer.
  • Give special attention to those who have special roles in the service, such as those who are providing special music or preaching.
Tips for this Activity
  • The prayer teams could meet in someone’s home as an alternate location.
  • Instead of keeping the groups the same, you can mix them up so that people experience praying with a variety of people.
I participated in this prayer activity while we attended Kings Chapel in Springfield, Missouri in the early 1990s.

A Combined Tenebrae and Seven Last Words Good Friday Service

Idea Tenebrae, a Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows,” is a service that moves from full light in a sanctuary and ends in total darkness, signifying the death of the Light of the World—Jesus—on Good Friday. In this variation incorporating the Seven Sayings of the Cross, the platform becomes more stark and dark as participants depart and extinguish a candle. Preparation Set up seven candles on a Communion table at the center of the sanctuary. Six purple candles should encircle a single white candle in the center. A six-person worship team should serve, one being the lead vocalist, who will sing acapella alone for one stanza at the end. Seven readers should be selected to read one of the seven sayings and pray as indicated below. At opening of the service, a designated person walks down the center aisle and lights the candles.
